Heraldry, historical and popular
Charles Boutell's Heraldry, Historical and Popular, published by Bentley in London in 1864, a reference survey of coats of arms written for British antiquarians and general readers. Line-engraved shields, crowned helms and quartered escutcheons fill the plates, some hand-coloured in blue, gold and red, supplying lions rampant, scallops, fleurs-de-lis, interlaced knots, heraldic dragons and swans as clean outline motifs.
