Herbert Carter's legacy, or, The inventor's son
A Horatio Alger juvenile novel of a poor widow's son and his inventor father's legacy, published in Philadelphia by Porter & Coates in 1875 for boy readers, with wood engravings cut by Russell & Richardson. The plates are tonal wood engravings of small-town and rural incident — figures beside a stream, a wagon, roadside trees — printed on cream stock, and the plain dark green cloth boards scan as flat textured backgrounds.
