Heroes and martyrs of invention
Short biographies of inventors, written by American journalist George Makepeace Towle and published in Boston by Lee and Shepard in 1890 for young readers. The plates are wood engravings of men at work among machinery — Watt beside a beam engine, Nasmyth's steam hammer, Hargreaves's spinning jenny — printed dark with captions and page references, useful for workshop interiors, gearing, flywheels and lamplit figure-and-machine silhouettes.
