A German translation of Cesare Ripa's Iconologia by Lorenz Strauss, printed by Wilhelm Serlin at Frankfurt in 1669 for artists, poets and emblem-makers needing standard figures for abstract ideas. Square woodcuts, many hand-coloured, show single standing personifications with attributes — horn, crown, wind-blown drapery, animals at the feet — set in ruled frames beside repeating foliate ornament strips.
