Het menselyk bedryf
Het menselyk bedryf, an emblem book of trades etched by Jan and Caspar Luyken and published in Amsterdam in 1694, pairing each craft with moralizing verse for Dutch readers and apprentices. The small square plates show potters, bookbinders, papermakers and dyers at work in cluttered workshops, with tools, benches, kilns and open doorways onto streets, drawn in dense cross-hatched line suited to spot illustration.
