Francis Quarles's 1638 emblem book, engraved by William Marshall and printed in London by M. Flesher for John Marriot, tracing human life through a burning candle in a two-handled urn. Each plate repeats that candle against landscapes with astrological signs, clouds, trees, skulls and serpents, giving designers a compact stock of engraved allegorical props and hatched skies.
