Jean Bodin's French treatise on witchcraft and demonology, first published 1580 and issued in this 1593 edition by Arnout Coninx at Antwerp, written to guide magistrates and jurists trying accused witches. The illustration here is typographic rather than pictorial: a woodcut initial S set in a square block of curling acanthus scrollwork, the letter shaded with diagonal hatching against a white ground, usable as a drop cap or as a source of late sixteenth-century foliate border motifs.
