Thomas Wright's history of caricature and the grotesque, translated by Amédée Pichot and published in Paris by A. Delahays in 1875, for antiquarians and readers of art history. The line engravings copy medieval misericords, manuscript marginalia, carved corbels and later satirical prints, giving masked mummers, fools in belled hoods, jesters, grinning demons and bloated dignitaries drawn in thin, even outline with no shading.
