Histoire de la magie en France, : depuis le commencement de la monarchie jusqu'à nos jours;

Garinet, Jules · 1818 · Paris; : Chez Foulon et compagnie, libraires... · 2 pictures

A French history of magic and witchcraft trials from the founding of the monarchy to 1818, written by Jules Garinet and published in Paris by Foulon et compagnie for a general reading public interested in sorcery and superstition. The two plates are an engraved frontispiece showing Joan of Arc burning at the stake inside a cloud-edged medallion, framed below by helmet, shield and sword among foliage, and a red-printed armorial bookplate with a galero, knotted cords, tasselled pendants, a phoenix over a flaming pot and fleurs-de-lis above a motto scroll; useful for stipple-engraved figure groups, allegorical medallion frames and clean heraldic line ornament.
