A three-volume history of alchemy with an annotated catalogue of writers on the subject, compiled by the Abbé Nicolas Lenglet Dufresnoy and printed by Coustelier in Paris in 1742 for scholarly and antiquarian readers. The pictures shown here are typographic ornaments — woodcut headpieces, tailpieces and centred vignettes built from acanthus scrolls, shells, palmettes and small pendant swags — usable as chapter dividers, borders and small spot decorations.
