Johann Joachim Winckelmann's history of ancient art, issued in French at Amsterdam by E. van Harrevelt in 1766 for antiquarians and collectors studying Greek and Roman sculpture and carved gems. The outline engravings copy intaglios, reliefs and coin profiles \u2014 a youth with a goat, Neptune's chariot over sea-serpents, paired bearded and helmeted heads \u2014 all drawn in thin unshaded line inside oval and rectangular frames, useful as clean classical silhouettes, medallion borders and profile portraits.
