Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall's multi-volume history of the Ottoman Empire, issued in French translation by Béthune et Plon in Paris in 1844 for European scholars and readers of Near Eastern history. The plates are engraved and lightly tinted historical maps from an atlas of Greece and Italy, with hachured coastlines, dense italic place-names, latitude and longitude borders and scale bars in French leagues, useful for cartographic line texture, Mediterranean coast outlines and small-scale engraved lettering.
