A two-volume history of ballooning by Gaston Tissandier, himself a balloonist, published in Paris by H. Launette in 1887 for a general readership interested in the first century of flight. The plates reproduce eighteenth- and nineteenth-century engravings and watercolours of inflations, ascents and crowds, offering balloon envelopes with netting and rigging, hand-coloured skies, and dense groups of onlookers, horses and carriages in open fields.
