Henry Sampson's 1874 survey of advertising from antiquity onward, published in London by Chatto for Victorian general readers curious about handbills, criers, and trade puffery. The plates reproduce woodcut shop signs, trade-card figures, crude jobbing-press vignettes and ornamented display capitals lifted from old newspapers, giving designers ready-made period lettering, pointing hands and small narrative cuts of tradesmen and customers.
