A survey of bookbinding history from ancient book forms onward, written by William Salt Brassington and published by Elliot Stock in London in 1894 for collectors, librarians and binders. The plates reproduce decorated covers in dense line and halftone: tooled centrepieces, foliate corner ornaments, diapered panels, armorial medallions, metal clasps and gauffered edges, usable as frames, borders and repeating ground patterns.
