A history of the art of bookbinding : with some account of the books of the ancients
A survey of bookbinding from ancient writing supports to nineteenth-century trade work, edited by William Salt Brassington and published by Elliot Stock in London in 1894 for collectors, librarians and binders. The plates reproduce tooled and stamped covers in dense black-and-white line and stipple — strapwork lozenges, scrolling foliage, arabesque centrepieces, armorial medallions and repeating border rolls — usable as frames, corner ornaments, endpaper patterns and panel fills.
