History of the cross : the pagan origin, and idolatrous adoption and worship, of the image

Ward, Henry Dana, 1797-1884 · 1871 · London : J. Nisbet · 5 pictures

A polemical study of the cross as a religious symbol, written by the American Adventist minister Henry Dana Ward and published in London by J. Nisbet in 1871 for Protestant readers. The engravings copy late Roman coins and medals in hard outline — profile emperors, helmeted soldiers with standards, chi-rho monograms in palm wreaths, and beaded circular borders usable as seals or badges.
