Inside Out Library

The history of the devil and the idea of evil; from the earliest times to the present day

Carus, Paul, 1852-1919 · 1899 · Chicago : Open Court Pub. Co.; London, K. Paul, Trench, Trubner · 260 pictures

Paul Carus's comparative study of devil figures and evil across religions, published in Chicago by Open Court in 1899 for general and scholarly readers. The 262 line engravings and woodcut facsimiles copy medieval sculpture, church murals, prints and manuscripts: horned demons with clawed feet, soul-weighing psychostasia, dragon-mouthed hell, and crowded battle and temptation scenes drawn in dense outline.
