The history of the devil and the idea of evil : from the earliest times to the present day
Paul Carus's comparative survey of demons, devils and evil across religions, published by the Open Court Publishing Company in Chicago in 1900 for lay readers of its rationalist religious-studies list. Its 277 plates reproduce medieval manuscript pages, woodcuts, engravings and modern pen drawings of horned devils, Norse gods, dragon combats and crowded hell and sabbath scenes, giving designers high-contrast line monsters and framed narrative panels.
