History of early steamboat navigation on the Missouri River : life and adventures of Joseph La Barge

Chittenden, Hiram Martin, 1858-1917 · 1903 · New York : F.P. Harper · 6 pictures

A two-volume history of Missouri River steamboating built around the career of St. Louis pilot Joseph La Barge, written by army engineer Hiram Martin Chittenden and published by F.P. Harper in New York in 1903 for readers of western and river history. The plates are coarse-screen halftones from photographs: stern-wheelers moored at muddy banks with spars and long gangplanks, freight stacked on levees, and wide river bends under bluffs, useful for grainy monochrome texture, silhouetted boat profiles, and low-horizon landscape framing.
