The history of fashion in France, or, The dress of women from the Gallo-Roman period to the present time
A survey of French women's dress from the Gallo-Roman era onward, written by Augustin Challamel and issued in English translation by Frances Cashel Hoey and John Lillie for Scribner and Welford in New York in 1882, aimed at general readers and students of costume. The plates are hand-coloured groups of standing figures arranged in rows against blank grounds, showing gowns, ruffs, headdresses and embroidered panels in flat pinks, blues and gold, useful for period silhouettes, colour pairings and cut-out figure groupings.
