A history of the Gothic revival : an attempt to show how the taste for mediæval architecture, which lingered in England during the two last centuries, has since been encouraged and developed
Charles Locke Eastlake's 1872 architectural history, published in London and New York, traces the return of medieval building forms in England for architects, antiquarians and the Victorian reading public. The plates are line engravings of Gothic Revival churches, colleges and civic buildings seen in three-quarter view, with banded polychrome masonry, steep gable roofs, pointed arcades and small figures for scale, useful for tracery patterns, roof silhouettes and hatched stonework texture.
