History of merchant shipping and ancient commerce
A four-volume maritime history by shipowner and MP William Schaw Lindsay, published in London by Sampson Low in 1874 for merchants, shipping men and general readers. The wood engravings are portraits of individual vessels in harbour and under sail, drawn with fine rigging lines against flat water and faint shorelines, giving designers hull profiles, mast-and-spar diagrams and silhouettes.
