A history of painting
Volume from Haldane Macfall's multi-volume survey A History of Painting, issued by T.C. and E.C. Jack in London and Edinburgh in 1911 for general readers and art students. The plates are colour reproductions of nineteenth-century landscape painting — Turner watercolour washes of misty valleys and coastlines, Corot's backlit trees above a distant town — offering soft atmospheric gradients, loose foliage silhouettes and muted earth-and-grey palettes.
