A history of painting
Volume from Haldane Macfall's multi-volume survey A History of Painting, issued in Boston by Dana Estes and Co. around 1900 for general readers and art students. The plates are colour reproductions of oil and watercolour paintings—misty harbours, riverbanks with bare trees, crowded allegorical processions, dim cottage interiors—useful for soft-edged painterly texture, muted earth-and-grey palettes and loose atmospheric backgrounds.
