Haldane Macfall's multi-volume A History of Painting, published in Boston by Dana Estes in 1911 with a preface by Frank Brangwyn, surveyed European painting for general readers and students. The plates are colour reproductions of Italian panel paintings and frescoes: enthroned Madonnas under arches, kneeling saints in rocky landscapes, and processions of draped figures useful for drapery, gesture and muted pigment palettes.
