The plates are three-colour halftone reproductions of Old Master canvases—Velázquez's Las Meninas, El Greco's St. Louis, Zurbarán's kneeling monk, a Tiepolo martyrdom—dark, warm-toned, and heavily shadowed, useful for painterly textures, court costume, and single figures isolated against near-black grounds.
