A volume from Haldane Macfall's multi-part history of painting, published in Boston by Dana Estes in 1911 with a preface by Frank Brangwyn, written for general readers and art students. The plates are colour reproductions of Dutch seventeenth-century paintings — half-length portraits against dark grounds, group portraits in ruffs and black dress, and domestic interiors with tiled floors, leaded windows and fireplaces — useful for period costume, interior architecture and low-key colour palettes.
