A history of the rise and progress of the arts of design in the United States
William Dunlap's 1834 account of American painters, engravers and architects, reissued in 1918 by Charles E. Goodspeed of Boston with notes by Frank W. Bayley for collectors and art historians. Halftone plates reproduce oil portraits and miniatures of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century sitters, faces lit against dark grounds, useful for period costume, oval vignette framing and soft tonal texture.
