A history of the rise and progress of the arts of design in the United States
William Dunlap's 1834 account of American painters, engravers and architects, reissued in 1918 by Boston publisher C. E. Goodspeed in an edition annotated by Frank W. Bayley for collectors and art historians. The plates are halftone reproductions of oil portraits, mostly head-and-shoulders against dark grounds, giving designers a stock of early American faces, high collars, stocks and cravats, and soft tonal vignetting.
