The history of signboards : from earliest times to the present day
A popular antiquarian survey of English inn and shop signs by Jacob Larwood and John Camden Hotten, published in London by Hotten in 1866 for general readers and collectors. The line-block cuts copy old painted boards and carved signs: armoured men, half-naked figures among flowers, framed tavern groups, a crown, a hanging sign bracket — usable as spot emblems and heraldic motifs.
