The history of signboards : from the earliest times to the present day
A popular antiquarian survey of English tavern and shop signs by Jacob Larwood and John Camden Hotten, published in London in 1870 for general readers and collectors. Reproduced woodcuts show armoured and costumed figures, heraldic beasts, cupids and bears, plants and emblems in coarse black outline, useful as ready-made pictorial marks, spot illustrations and crude-line character silhouettes.
