History of the worsted manufacture in England, from the earliest times; with introductory notices of the manufacture among the ancient nations, and during the middle ages
John James's 1857 history of the English worsted trade, published in London by Longman and addressed to manufacturers, antiquarians and trade readers tracing the industry from antiquity through the mid-Victorian mills. The plates are wood-engraved machine diagrams — spinning frames, carding and drawing machines shown in elevation, section and perspective — with ranks of repeated bobbins, spindles, toothed gearwheels and scalloped cast-iron frames that read as ready-made ornamental rhythm and industrial line work.
