Hokusai manga
A 1912 Unsōdō reprint, published in Kyoto, of Katsushika Hokusai's sketchbook series first issued from 1814 as drawing models for students and artisans. The woodblock pages are pure line: rivers built from repeated parallel strokes, fields filled with stippled dots and dashes, hills capped by clumped trees, offering ready-made texture patterns and shorthand for water, foliage and terrain.
