Inside Out Library

The homes of our forefathers. Being a selection of the oldest and most interesting buildings, historical houses, and noted places in Massachusetts. From original drawings made on the spot by Edwin Whitefield

Whitefield, Edwin, 1816-1892 · 1880 · Boston, A. Williams and Co. · 71 pictures

An antiquarian survey of surviving colonial dwellings in Massachusetts, drawn on site by Edwin Whitefield and published in Boston in 1880 for local historians and readers interested in early New England building. The plates are tinted pen-and-ink views of clapboard and shingled houses set among trees and fences, each with heavy central chimneys, lean-to roofs and small-paned windows; useful for building silhouettes, foliage hatching and warm two-tone backgrounds.
