How to know architecture : the human elements in the evolution of styles
A popular survey of architectural styles written by the American architect Frank Edwin Wallis and published by Harper and Brothers in New York in 1914 for general readers and students. The 145 plates are halftone photographs of building exteriors, close views of arcades, rusticated stonework and window bays, plus older engraved bird's-eye city views, giving designers facade elevations, ornament details and dense line-engraved townscapes.
