A 1915 foundry trade manual by Erle John Byerlein, printed in Saginaw, Michigan, instructing patternmakers and molders in building and using match plates for sand casting. The plates are grainy halftone photographs of cast-iron flasks, hinged plate frames, and disc-shaped patterns shot against blank grounds, offering designers isolated machine-shop objects with heavy shadow, coarse screen texture, and sepia paper tone.
