A mail-order instruction booklet issued by Sears, Roebuck & Co. in Chicago in 1904, teaching ordinary customers to apply its paints and varnishes to furniture, floors and farm buildings. Wood-engraved line cuts show a man varnishing an upended chair, a woman brushing floorboards, a barn in ruled perspective, and a cutaway paint pail, all built from dense hatching usable as texture and vignette.
