Hunting of synchronous machines
An engineering thesis on the hunting (oscillation) of synchronous machines, written by Owen Eugene Grigsby and George Edgar Ellison at the University of Illinois in 1911 for faculty examiners and electrical engineers. The plates are photographs of oscillograph traces: pale sine waves and beat patterns on scratched, fogged sepia grounds, numbered by hand, useful as ready-made waveform textures, rhythm strips, and grainy photographic backgrounds.
