Iacobi Catzii ... Silenus Alcibiades, sive Proteus:

Cats, Jacob, 1577-1660 · 1618 · t'Amsterdam : By W. Blaeu · 125 pictures

Jacob Cats's Silenus Alcibiades, sive Proteus, an emblem book printed by Willem Blaeu in Amsterdam in 1618, pairing Latin, Dutch and French mottoes and verses with engraved devices for educated readers who read each image three ways, as love lesson, moral and sermon. The plates are circular copperplate engravings set into letterpress pages: a piper beside a beached whale skeleton, an ivy-choked tree with a squirrel, a hand at a candle flame, all with fine hatched skies, distant church towers and hard outlines that hold up when scaled down as a vignette or seal.
