Iconologia
Cesare Ripa's Iconologia in the 1645 Venetian edition printed by Cristoforo Tomasini, with additions by Giovanni Zaratino Castellini, a dictionary of personified abstractions compiled for painters, poets, and emblem-makers. Square woodcuts show standing female figures in belted drapery, each holding an attribute—sword, lamb, distaff, branch—over bare hatched ground, giving designers a stock of allegorical bodies and emblematic objects.
