Iconologia
Cesare Ripa's Iconologia in the expanded edition annotated by Cesare Orlandi, printed at Perugia by Piergiovanni Costantini in 1764, a handbook of personified abstractions for painters, sculptors, poets and makers of devices. Engraved plates show single standing figures with identifying attributes in bare landscapes, plus paired figures, motto banderoles and winged-genius headpieces, giving designers a stock of allegorical emblems, scrollwork ornaments and ribbon labels.
