Iconologia
Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, the standard handbook of allegorical personifications, reissued in Perugia in 1764 with commentary by Cesare Orlandi for painters, poets and emblem-makers. Small copperplate engravings show single seated or standing female figures carrying identifying attributes — crown, open book, caduceus, olive branch, tambourine — against sketchy landscapes with harbours and ruins, captioned by region or virtue, with woodcut headpieces of winged genii holding wreaths over acanthus scrollwork.
