Iconologia del cavaliere Cesare Ripa, perugino
Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, the standard handbook of allegorical personifications first issued in 1593, here in the expanded Perugia edition of 1764 annotated by Cesare Orlandi and printed by Piergiovanni Costantini for painters, poets and emblem-makers. Small etched plates show seated and standing female figures identified by attributes — caduceus, olive branch, crowns of towers and snakes — against plain skies and distant coastlines, alongside woodcut headpieces of winged genii flanked by busts and scrollwork.
