Iconologia del cavaliere Cesare Ripa, perugino
Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, the standard handbook of allegorical personifications first issued in 1593, here in the expanded Perugia edition annotated by Cesare Orlandi and printed by Piergiovanni Costantini in 1764 for artists, poets and scholars needing agreed attributes for abstract ideas. Alongside figure plates the volume carries repeated letterpress ornaments cut in coarse relief: a winged genius holding laurel branches between scrolled acanthus and two laureate busts on brackets, useful as symmetrical headpieces, spot ornaments, or sources for wing, foliage and pedestal motifs.
