Iconologia del cavaliere Cesare Ripa, perugino
Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, the standard handbook of allegorical personifications, reissued in Perugia in 1764 with commentary by Cesare Orlandi for painters, poets, and orators needing correct attributes. Each entry carries a small etched plate of a seated or standing female figure holding emblems—caduceus, olive branch, sceptre, cornucopia—against clouds, shoreline, or distant fortified towns, plus woodcut headpieces of winged Fame flanked by laurelled busts and acanthus scrollwork.
