Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, printed at Siena in 1613 by the heirs of Matteo Florimi, catalogues personifications of virtues, vices, passions, arts, elements, rivers and regions for orators, poets, painters and sculptors. Each woodcut sets a standing allegorical figure with identifying attributes inside a ruled frame flanked by strapwork pilasters, caryatid figures and mascaron heads, supplying ready-made emblem borders and symbol vocabulary.
