Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, first issued 1593 and here in Nicolò Pezzana's 1669 Venice edition with Giovanni Zaratino Castellini's additions, is a handbook of allegorical figures compiled for artists, poets, and orators. The 358 small woodcuts show single standing women in loose drapery, each identified by held attributes — sword, dove, flame, building, trampled beast — usable as ready-made personifications and emblem stock.
