Iconologia, or, Moral emblems
Cesare Ripa's Iconologia in Pierce Tempest's 1709 London edition, engraved after Isaac Fuller, supplying artists, writers and craftsmen with standard personifications of virtues, vices, passions and abstractions. Each numbered roundel holds a single figure in a landscape with identifying attributes — scales, palms, cornucopias, serpents, flames — usable as ready-made allegorical symbols, medallion frames or captioned figure vignettes.
