Iconologia, ouero Descrittione d'imagini delle virtu', vitij, affetti, passioni humane, corpi celesti, mondo e sue parti.
Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, printed at Padua by Pietro Paolo Tozzi in 1611, is a handbook of personified virtues, vices, passions, heavenly bodies and regions, compiled for painters, sculptors, poets and deviser of emblems. Each entry carries a framed woodcut of a standing draped figure with identifying attributes, flanked by candelabra-and-mask ornament strips that designers can lift as borders, stock allegorical figures or attribute vocabulary.
